Sentosa Golf Club has once again demonstrated its position at the forefront of sustainable golf course management, achieving GEO Certified® recertification for 2026.

Widely recognised as one of the world’s leading golf facilities, Sentosa continues to set the benchmark for how environmental stewardship, operational excellence, and world-class playing conditions can coexist. This latest recertification further strengthens its reputation—not only within Asia, but globally—as a model for responsible and forward-thinking golf course management.

A Global Benchmark for Sustainable Golf

Sentosa Golf Club’s sustainability journey extends well beyond certification. The club has received multiple international accolades, including being named World’s Best Eco-Friendly Golf Facility, as well as recognition as a Sustainability Champion of the Year.

In a landmark achievement, Sentosa also became the world’s first carbon-neutral golf club, setting a new standard for the industry and demonstrating what is possible when sustainability is embedded into long-term strategy and daily operations.

The club further reinforced its leadership by becoming the first golf facility globally to join the UN Sports for Climate Action Initiative, aligning its environmental commitments with internationally recognised climate targets.

Together, these achievements position Sentosa not just as a high-performing golf facility but as a global benchmark for sustainable golf course management.

A Comprehensive and Integrated Approach

What sets Sentosa apart is not simply the number of sustainability initiatives, but how they are integrated into a cohesive, data-driven system that balances environmental responsibility with elite playing standards.

During the recertification process, several standout initiatives were identified:

  • Protection and enhancement of a rare coastal mangrove habitat unique within Singapore
  • Coral regeneration and shoreline stabilisation projects supporting marine biodiversity
  • Establishment of native bee colonies and habitat initiatives to support pollinators
  • Educational partnerships with schools and universities to promote environmental awareness
  • A 30% reduction in the maintained fairway turf area to improve efficiency and reduce inputs
  • Advanced irrigation monitoring using Soil Scout sensors, TDR, and USGA moisture meters
  • On-site composting, waste tracking, and resource efficiency programs

These initiatives are not isolated efforts—they form part of a broader system designed to reduce inputs, enhance natural ecosystems, and improve long-term resilience.

Measurable Impact and Resource Efficiency

A key strength of Sentosa’s approach is its focus on measurable outcomes. Sustainability is not treated as a concept, but as a performance-driven framework supported by data and continuous monitoring.

Through a combination of precision irrigation, turf reduction, and improved agronomic practices, the club has achieved significant gains in resource efficiency. These include substantial reductions in water use, alongside meaningful decreases in fertiliser and chemical inputs through targeted application and GPS sprayer technologies.

On-site waste management systems further contribute to this efficiency. Organic waste is processed through digesters and composting programs, creating a circular system where waste is repurposed into materials that support ongoing turf and landscape performance.

This integrated approach not only reduces environmental impact but also strengthens operational efficiency — demonstrating that sustainability and performance are not competing priorities, but aligned objectives.

Independent Verification by BRT Agronomy

Sentosa Golf Club General Manager Andrew Johnston reinforced the club’s long-term commitment to sustainability:

“Development of our ecosystems to become more efficient and powerful in a sustainable environment is not just our goal — it’s a way of life. Having been recertified under GEO’s framework is an indicator we are working to achieve this.”

“Sentosa continues to impress with its long list of environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives, underpinned by a highly structured and data-driven approach to managing nature, resources, and community engagement,” said Brad Revill.

“From protecting a unique coastal mangrove habitat and supporting coral regeneration, to establishing native bee colonies and delivering education programs, the club is demonstrating genuine leadership and long-term commitment.

“This is matched by strong performance in resource efficiency, including advanced irrigation and soil moisture sensing technology, reductions in managed turf areas, and a clear commitment to carbon neutrality with ambitions to go even further.”

Independent verification plays a critical role in ensuring that sustainability efforts are credible, measurable, and aligned with internationally recognised best practice — providing confidence that outcomes are both meaningful and transparent.
